These resources are designed to support students in understanding how to analyse photographs in detail. They can be printed double sided with the Grid (below) on one side and one of the specific image sheets on the reverse.

Visual Analysis Sheets

Image SpinnerThis is a great resource from Triptico for displaying a sequence of images on a particular theme or with a specific theoretical perspective in mind. For example, below are a series of images which can be randomly selected by spinning the wheel. Students are asked to draw a horizontal line on a piece of paper, putting the word Mirror at one end and Window at the other (this corresponds to John Szarkowski's theory that photographs tend to be one or the other, sometimes both). Students are introduced briefly to the theory. Then, as each image is revealed, students decide where on the spectrum they would place it and justify their reasons.
